What If Our Good Is Not Good Enough?

By Ianpassion

I was having my morning Thai coffee and grilled sticky rice while reflecting on our involvement in developing our communities and reaching out to the less fortunate— the poor and the marginalized.

It is in our nature to be good to someone, whether a friend or a community that is suffering. However, have we ever asked ourselves: What if our good is not good enough?

There is no doubt that those born into believing households know how the Son lived when He was on earth. For us, He is our role model. For others who have chosen different figures, we respect their choice.

In the short time before the crucifixion of the Son, He showed us how to live as a good person with a great heart for others, especially the needy. Even though He knew that the world would pass away and physical afflictions were temporary, He still addressed the physical and material needs of thousands of people.

From observing His life, we see:

He did not isolate Himself from the community. He achieved spirituality by living among people, not as a hermit.

He was involved and present, always available to those in need. He invested His life not only in His disciples but also in countless men, women, and children. He taught, healed, fed, and addressed people’s needs. It is difficult to fathom the extent of His humanitarian work while He was alive.

The Son was perhaps the most approachable figure in human history. There were no laws or bureaucratic systems that separated Him from others. No uniform made Him look extraordinary or holy. He had nothing to pretend. Yet, He was The King of All Kings. He lived in a community where His life was an open book to everyone.

In Mark 1:32-39, due to the Son’s compassion and good deeds, many people in the community came seeking help from Him:

“And rising very early in the morning, while it was still dark, He departed and went out to a desolate place, and there He prayed. And Simon and those who were with Him searched for Him, and they found Him and said to Him, ‘Everyone is looking for You.’ And He said to them, ‘Let us go to the next towns, that I may preach there also, for that is why I came out.’ And He went throughout all Galilee, preaching in their synagogues and casting out demons.”

After spending time with the Father, instead of staying to help more people who had waited for Him overnight, He left the town to go to the next town to share the Good News.

From this passage, we see that the Son did not limit His goodness to humanitarian work or charity alone. He also made it clear that He came to share the Good News—to invite people to believe in Him, help them turn from their evil ways, and become the sons and daughters of the Father.

What do I think about this?

It’s not only about helping people ease their temporal predicaments but also about guiding humanity toward true spiritual deliverance, which I consider the most important need to address. It is crucial that those who are searching find us available and ready to help them develop an intimate relationship with their true Source.
