The most important relationship we have is with our "self."
Too many people are not happy with their "self." They focus on what they don't have, on their flaws and failures. Why am I not like him or her? Instead of accepting themselves as a one-of-a-kind masterpiece created in the image of our Almighty Father, they wish to be someone else, to have a better life, and to have a different personality.
They then question why they are unhappy. It's because they do not have good relationships with their own "self." We cannot get along with others unless we first get along with our "self." We can't love others unless we first love our "self."
The best thing we can do for our family and friends is to love our "self." Why not treat our "self" as we treat others? Why not appreciate our "self" as much as we appreciate others? We are kind to others, so why not to our "self?" Why not pray for our "self" as we pray for others? This is not selfishness. But when we love our "self", we glorify our Father in Heaven.
Thus, It is no surprise that the Son said, "Love your neighbor as yourself," because we can't truly love others if we don't like our own "self."
