What Can We Learn from the Wildfires in California?

Photo belongs to the right owner.

The wildfires in California have left behind significant destruction and loss, but in the midst of this tragedy, there are valuable lessons we can reflect upon. I have three in mind:

1. The Importance of Safety and Preparedness

The devastation in California was exacerbated by a lack of preparation in certain areas. One major issue was the scarcity of water, which could have been a vital resource in preventing the fires from spreading. There weren’t enough water hydrants, pumps to add pressure to the water, or even automatic water systems installed around homes to prevent fires from catching. I can't imagine that this is happening in America. In fire-prone areas, we should always be vigilant and proactive. We must recognize the dangers and take necessary precautions. The Bible reminds us to be wise and prepared: “The prudent see danger and take refuge, but the simple keep going and pay the penalty” (Proverbs 22:3). If we know the risk, we should not ignore it.

2. Material Possessions Are Temporary

A tragic part of the fire’s destruction was its impact on some of the wealthiest individuals, including celebrities and high-profile figures. The luxurious homes and multi-million-dollar properties that took years, if not decades, to accumulate were gone in just a matter of hours. This stark reality serves as a reminder that material wealth is fleeting and can be destroyed in an instant. I am not saying wealth is evil. What I would like to say is not to let our hearts be overwhelmed by earthly treasures or pleasure. Jesus warned us in Matthew 6:19-21, saying: “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven... For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” We are reminded to seek first His Kingdom and not to put our trust in wealth that will not last. Wealth is not inherently bad, but it should never replace our relationship with our Almighty Father.

3. Do Not Mock the Father

If you don’t believe in the Father, it’s important to refrain from mocking Him or making fun of Him. Our culture has become increasingly dismissive of faith, and we’ve seen instances of this mockery in various public events. For example, during the Golden Globe Awards, some celebrities ridiculed the Father, laughing at the idea of Him receiving zero votes. This is not only disrespectful but dangerous. As Billy Graham once wisely stated, "You go so far, and one day judgment of the Father will fall upon you." The Bible warns us against mocking the Father and His authority. In Galatians 6:7, it says, “Do not be deceived: the Father cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows.” We must remember that Father's sovereignty is not something to be trivialized or disrespected. His patience is great, but there are consequences to dishonoring Him.

“Stay safe and be wise, especially as the hot weather approaches.”
